According to the United Nations, we produce 300 million tonnes of plastic every year, which is nearly equivalent to the weight of the entire global population. Research shows that around 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic have been produced since 1950. The majority of these plastic wastes from our day-to-day use end up in landfills and oceans through rivers. These plastic wastes take up many centuries to degrade from their current form. If we don't act immediately, our oceans could contain more plastic than fish by 2050. Plastic waste can serve as a geological indicator of the Anthropocene era.
If we switch to using a toothbrush made up of bamboo instead of a plastic handle, we save around 12 gm of plastic. Over a normal lifetime, we can reduce around 5.4 Kg of plastic from the environment and a household of 4 people can save around 21.6 Kg of plastic. If we start using natural plant-based loofah instead of plastic loofah, we can reduce 25g of plastic from the planet. It will mean 5.6 Kg of less plastic on the planet over an average human life. Similarly, if we replace our plastic lamp with bamboo-based lamps or our kitchen plastic utensils with wooden utensils we can all do our bit for our beloved planet. Though we are doing a lot, we need to do more and faster.
